Chicago's Mexican Independence Day Festivities Are Back: Road Closures to Note

The long-awaited Mexican Independence Day celebration is finally back in Chicago!

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the vibrant and lively Mexican Independence Day Parade and Festival will return to the streets of Chicago on September 17 and 18, 2022. The parade will kick off at 12 pm on Saturday, September 17, along the traditional route:

  • Starting at the intersection of Pulaski and Fullerton
  • Proceeding west on Fullerton to California
  • Southbound on California to 26th Street

Residents and visitors can expect road closures along the parade route and surrounding areas during the event. The city encourages attendees to plan their transportation and parking accordingly. Expect heavy traffic and delays in the parade area and use public transportation whenever possible.

Here's a detailed list of road closures to be aware of:

On Saturday, September 17th:

• Fullerton Avenue will be closed from Pulaski Road to California Avenue from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
• California Avenue will be closed from Fullerton Avenue to 26th Street from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
• 26th Street will be closed from California Avenue to Pulaski Road from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

On Sunday, September 18th:

• Harrison Street will be closed from Racine Avenue to Damen Avenue from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
• Damen Avenue will be closed from Harrison Street to Taylor Street from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
• Taylor Street will be closed from Damen Avenue to Ashland Avenue from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
• Ashland Avenue will be closed from Taylor Street to Roosevelt Road from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
• Roosevelt Road will be closed from Ashland Avenue to Clark Street from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

The Chicago Police Department will be on-site to direct traffic and ensure public safety during the event. Attendees are advised to follow the instructions of law enforcement officers and exercise caution while traveling in the area.
