Bank Closures Hit Northern Ireland
147 Bank Branches to Close in UK
Grim Reading for Those Who Don't Bank Online
LINK has put forward 147 banking hubs for areas in the UK, including 147 in Northern Ireland. The trend in Northern Ireland is mirrored across the UK with 245 banks set to close in 2024 plus another six that have already closed. The figures make for grim reading if you don't bank online - 1541 banks have either closed or announced an intention to close.
Four branches of Ulster Bank and two Barclays closed in February and another five banks are set to close this month. Customers in Northern Ireland have been left without access to face-to-face banking after the closure of a number of branches.
The wave of bank closures has affected every part of the UK with a total of 1107 lost in England alone plus another 92 in Scotland. AIB has announced it will close eight of its Northern Ireland branches in November. The bank said it follows a review of its branch network and a decline in the number of customers using branches.
